Vaganova Ballet Academy





Agrippina Yakovlevna Vaganova  was born on June 26, 1879. With her father being an usher for the Mariinsky Theater, she was exposed to the theater early and started dancing at the Imperial Ballet School  in 1889 at the age of 10. 

She graduated from the Imperial Ballet School in 1897 and was offered a contract with the Kirov Ballet. She received the title of Ballerina in 1915, just 1 year before her farewell performance. 

Agrippina Vaganova taught at a number of school after she retired from the stage such as; Akim Volinsky's School of Russian Ballet (Balfot), Leningrad Choreographic Academy (formerly called the Imperial Ballet School), the State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet. She took over as The Kirov Artistic Director in 1931 and continued until 1937.

Agrippina Vaganova died in 1951 and the Imperial Ballet School was renamed after her in 1957 in recognition of her achievements.
