Vaganova Aesthetic

The Vaganova Method encourages dancers to move their arms, legs and torso together in perfect harmony. She believed that having a strong torso was a necessity because the torso forms the foundation of all movements.

Vaganova paid special attention to hands and expression through arms. The hands should not grow gradually from on movement to the next, but should "flap" into place at the last moment. Hands should be held distinctly, with the thumb held close to the middle finger and the pointer and ring finger slightly raised.

Vaganova also put a lot of emphasis on expression and character portrayal. Alla Osipenko, a former student said, "...you can express a lot with the soul in the art of ballet. And when I say that execution will become more expressive, people will stop paying attention to whether you turned four or five rotations if you turned them in an emotional state, understanding why you are doing it, why five turns are needed. They're needed because the soul demands it; they are an expression of dance."
